Quad Cabin Cruise Savings: Sharing the Space

Cruise fares are priced per person, usually on the basis of two people sharing a cabin. That is why a quad cabin cruise — four people in one cabin — is one of the most effective savings for families and close friends. The cabin costs the line almost the same to run whether two people or four are in it, and fares for the third and fourth guests reflect that.

  • The first two guests pay the standard per-person fare.
  • Third and fourth guests are usually charged a lower fare; some lines run promotions where they sail at a further reduction.
  • Taxes, port fees and daily gratuities are charged for every guest, so these do not shrink.
  • Only cabins with enough beds and approved occupancy can take three or four guests, and they sell out first on holiday weeks.

What a Four-Berth Cabin Is Really Like

Most quad cabins are standard cabins with extra beds: a sofa that converts at night and one or two upper berths that fold down from the wall or ceiling. The floor space and the bathroom are the same as for two. That works well for young children and for friends who mainly sleep in the cabin, and less well for four adults with large suitcases.

Some ships have family cabins or suites designed for four or more, with more room and sometimes a second bathroom. They cost more than a standard quad, but less than two separate cabins.

Quad Cabin Cruise: FAQ

What is a quad cabin on a cruise?

A cabin that can sleep four. The extra beds are usually a sofa bed or fold-down upper berths, sometimes called Pullman beds, so the cabin is the same size as a standard two-person cabin unless it is a family category.

Do the third and fourth guests pay the same as the first two?

Usually not. Cruise fares are quoted per person based on two sharing, and third and fourth guests are typically charged a lower fare. Taxes, fees and gratuities still apply to everyone.

Is one quad cabin better than two connecting cabins?

It is cheaper, but two cabins give you two bathrooms and far more space. Families with teenagers often decide the extra cost is worth it.
